A new generation, steeped in the rules and habits of the digital age, is entering the workforce in large numbers, and will soon make up the majority of employees in every company. How this generation – as well as older workers – uses social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to stay in touch with others has increased exponentially in just a few years. It is a phenomenon that is rapidly transforming the world of work.

With this in mind, Manpower Inc. (NYSE: MAN) recently surveyed over 34,000 employers in 35 countries and territories. The survey is intended to gauge employer attitudes toward the use of external social media in the workplace.

Manpower’s 2009 Talent Shortage Survey

Manpower’s 2009 Talent Shortage Survey reveals that the global talent crunch remains a pressing and pervasive issue for employers worldwide. Despite global recession and the weakest employment outlook in decades, employers are nonetheless facing a scarcity of talent in critical areas. Even as they’ve generally reduced their hiring, they are still looking to fill critical positions and are having trouble finding people who are the “perfect fit”—with the precise combination of skills and experience—for those roles. And so they are waiting until the right individual comes along. Click here to download the full paper and find out how you can overcome the global talent crunch.

Talent Shortage Survey

Manpower Inc. (NYSE: MAN) surveyed nearly 39,000 employers across 33 countries and territories in the first quarter of 2009 to determine the extent to which talent shortages are impacting today’s labor markets. The results of the fourth annual Talent Shortage Survey revealed that 30 percent of employers worldwide are having difficulty filling positions due to the lack of suitable talent available in their markets, which is one percentage point weaker compared to last year’s survey – a surprising result given the current downturn and the associated high unemployment in many markets. These results indicate that while more people may be looking for jobs, but they don’t generally have the skills that organisations are looking for.

2007 White Papers

The New Agenda for an Older Workforce

What percentage of your workforce is planning to retire in the next five to 10 years and what impact will it have on your organization? This is a key question that should be on the agenda for discussion at management meetings worldwide, as talent shortages worsen and replacements for those exiting the workforce become more difficult to find. The potential loss of productivity and intellectual capital could have a devastating impact on many businesses that are currently unprepared to adapt to the new realities of the aging workforce. And the conundrum on the horizon is that many of the people who have the talent that companies most need to retain, are those who have the financial flexibility and employment options to retire or downshift to a more flexible work arrangement.
